Luke 10:2 ESV Pray for Harvesters
Jesus said (Luke 10:2 ESV): "The harvest is plentiful, but the
laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest
to send out laborers into his harvest.”
I grew up in an agricultural area. Farmers prayed for good crops and
enough workers to harvest them. If you had too little of either or
if they were too late, it was a disaster.
I sense a disaster coming in the American – a shortage of church
workers. Serving as a church worker is becoming harder and harder:
the often harsh economics of education and pay and the stress of
dealing with societal and church issues. Many people expect a lot,
almost super human abilities and energy and extensive training. And,
increasingly church work is viewed as “just another job.” Still
others believe that anyone can do church work who has a “good heart”
even without training or a divine call.
Jesus sent out 72 disciples to spread the Gospel (Luke 10:1-10). He
selected them, empowered them and protected them. He instructed them
to go where people would receive them in peace and provide for them.
They were to travel light – bring no money or extra clothes. The
reason? Their hearers would provide for them.
Jesus anticipated that people would react differently to His
messengers of the Gospel: "The one who hears you hears me, and the
one who rejects you rejects me, and the one who rejects me rejects
him who sent me." And it will be better on Judgment Day for pagan
towns than those who pretend to be God’s people, but reject his
messengers.
Most American children today can tell you more about sports stars
than Jesus Christ, yet only Christ can save them. There is a
tremendous harvest potential in America. So, pray for the Lord to
send more harvesters to America and pray for your city that it would
receive and support the messengers. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
