Mercy! 7-11-2010

Luke 10:25-37 ESV
Mercy! A lawyer put Jesus to the test (Luke 10:25-37 ESV): "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus asked him what the law said: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself." And Jesus said to the lawyer, "You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live." The lawyer should have paused, taken a deep breath and said, “Lord, have mercy!” Who can do the law perfectly? If we are judged by the law, we will be found guilty and condemned. We can only be saved by grace through faith, because of what Jesus Christ did for us. But the lawyer, wanting to justify himself asked, “Who is my neighbor?” So, Jesus told him about a man who was robbed, stripped, beaten and left for dead on the road. A priest and a Levite (worship assistant) walk by him. Only an outcast Samaritan showed compassion on the man. He bound up the wounds, poured on oil and wine, gave him a ride to an inn and paid for his care. Which of these three proved to be a neighbor? The lawyer said, "The one who showed him mercy." And Jesus said to him, "You go, and do likewise." What about you? Would you help a man bleeding in the road? Maybe. What about a neighbor who is suffering from separation or someone with an addiction? Or, would you say, “It is none of my business.”? God showed you mercy. When you were dead in your sins and trespasses, Christ died for you. He healed you by His very blood. He has anointed you with peace, given you His very righteousness through faith and provided for your care now and in eternity. Jesus Christ is the Good Samaritan. Go and show mercy to others just as you have received mercy from Him. Lord, have mercy! Amen. Pastor Raymond Van Buskirk, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Baytown, TX www.rlcbaytown.org
