Luke 10:38-42 Top Priority
An elder visited a man who had not been in church recently.
Eventually, the elder asked about attendance. The man said, “I
cannot come on Sunday. My refrigerator is broken.” The elder asked,
“What does your refrigerator have to do with attending church?” The
man responded, “When you do not want to do something, one excuse is
as good as another.”
Mary and Martha had the most important visitor in the world, Jesus
Christ (Luke 10:38-42 ESV). Mary sat at the Lord's feet and listened
to his teaching, but Martha was distracted by household chores and
angry that Mary was not helping. Jesus said to her, "Martha, Martha,
you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is
necessary [hearing the Word of God]. Mary has chosen the good
portion, which will not be taken away from her."
Our lives are filled with troubles. Our only hope is through hearing
the Word of Jesus Christ and being saved through faith. Through the
hearing of the Word, we repent of our sins by His power and receive
forgiveness, healing, purpose, joy and eternal life.
Mary and Martha needed help. Little did they know that their
brother, Lazarus, was about to get sick and die (John 11). It is
hard enough to face the death of a loved one when you are in the
Lord, but without Him it is hell.
When Jesus came to Mary and Martha, they both knew the one necessary
thing. They confessed, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would
not have died.” And Martha added, “I know that whatever you ask from
God, God will give you." Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, because
He is the resurrection and life eternal.
Hear His Word and receive His Sacraments often so that you may be
blessed by His love, mercy and eternal life. Jesus Christ is the top
priority. Amen.
