John 3:1-21
Nicodemus was bothered by something (John 3:1-21). He wanted the truth. Jesus was performing amazing signs. He had turned water into wine, driven the moneychangers from the temple, and spoken about
destroying the temple and raising it in three days.
What was God saying through Jesus?
Nicodemus was a Pharisee. They thought they knew the truth. So, Nicodemus came to Jesus by night, secretly. Jesus told him (John 3:5
ESV): "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” The light of truth tells us that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
Only by being born again by God’s power can we be saved.
Nicodemus did not understand the truth. Jesus told him plainly (John
3:14-17): “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up [on a cross], that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”
The problem is that many people love the darkness and hate the light that exposes their evil. John 3:21 says, “But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been carried out in God."
Nicodemus loved the light of truth, Jesus Christ. After Jesus was lifted up on the cross, Nicodemus came in daylight with a fortune in spices to anoint His body (John 19:39). Nicodemus witnessed to the “true light that enlightens everyone.” John 1:5 says, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” The light takes away all sins and fears.
Let this true light shine in your heart and make you a witness for
Jesus Christ. Amen.
