Luke 12 Seek His Kingdom
Since the 12th Century authors have written stories about the Holy
Grail, supposedly the chalice that was used at the Last Supper and
also to capture Jesus’ blood from the cross. It was believed that he
who attained the Holy Grail would have healing, life, sustenance and
regeneration. Knights of King Arthur’s time such as Sir Percival and
Galahad supposedly went on quests to find it. They could only find
it if they were “pure” knights who had achieved a high level of
holiness by their conduct.
Legends often take a grain of truth and mix it with cultural beliefs
and customs. It is true that Holy Communion is bread and wine
together with the body and blood of Christ given by God through the
words of Christ to us for our forgiveness, life and salvation.
However, the grace of God given to us in Holy Baptism and Communion
is not earned by us, but is the free gift of God earned for us by
Christ on the cross. Our quest is through faith, not by traipsing
through the English countryside. And faith itself is the gift of God
that comes to us through the work of the Holy Spirit as we hear the
Gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ.
Are you questing for something really important? Many people quest
after food, drink, clothing, and health programs. They worry about
children, the economy, natural disasters, wars, and the world. None
of these quests and worries can add one day to their lives or
enjoyment.
Jesus tells us (Luke 12 ESV), “And do not seek what you are to eat
and what you are to drink, nor be worried. For all the nations of the
world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need
them. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to
you.”
Begin you quest with the Bible, God’s word for your life. Listen to
the Word being explained by your pastor and receive the righteousness
of Christ that comes through faith. Receive the blessings of Holy
Baptism and Holy Communion, and hear the words that your sins are
forgiven. Join others in prayer, praise, and fellowship in Christ.
Seek first His kingdom and righteousness and all of your needs will
be provided as well. Amen.
