Be Wise in Christ

Matthew 2:1-12

The Magi were wise men (Matthew 2:1-12).  They studied the natural and the supernatural and knew the difference.  They saw God’s handwriting in the sky.  Numbers 24:17 (ESV) says, “…a star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel…”

In faith, they traveled the dangerous miles from the East to Jerusalem to consult with the wise. Certainly King Herod would know.

They asked, "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him." (Matthew

2:2)  Herod was politically shrewd and treacherous, but not religious.  His religious men were not wise, but knew the Scriptures (Matthew 2:6): " 'And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.' "

Jerusalem sat dumbfounded, but the Magi came to Jesus.  The Bethlehem star led the way.  They found the baby Jesus, rejoiced and worshipped, and gave gifts of gold, and frankincense and myrrh.  And they listened to a dream from God not to report back to King Herod (because he planned to murder the child).

How wise are we today?  Many scientists have profound theories, but deny the intelligent design of the universe.  Governments limit religious expression, particularly about Jesus Christ.  Religious leaders often know the words, but miss the true message of the Christ.  And the general population is often asleep when the grace and truth of Jesus Christ are proclaimed on Sundays.

But, now as then, the Word enlightens receptive hearts and fills them with love, hope, peace and joy.  And God cleanses their hearts of all sins in Jesus’ name.  Be wise in Jesus Christ, Amen.
