The Wicked Stewards 3-21-2010

Luke 20:9-20
The Wicked Stewards

If you have ever rented out property, you know the value of a good
tenant, a good steward of your property.  Wicked stewards destroy
property.

God gave the Jews a wonderful inheritance.  He brought them out of
Egypt, out of their slavery to sin, and gave them the Promised Land.
Yet, they were not good stewards.  They did not produce the fruits of
righteousness, good works, by loving God and loving neighbor.
Instead, they self-dealt and worshiped false gods.  God grieved.

He sent Jesus to save them, but many rejected His message of
repentance and salvation through faith.  He told a parable about
tenants who were wicked stewards (Luke 20:9-20).  The owner put them
in charge of a vineyard, but they would not give his agents any
fruit.  In fact, they abused the owner’s messengers.  Finally, the
owner sent his son: “’Perhaps they will respect him.'  But when the
tenants saw him, they said to themselves, 'This is the heir. Let us
kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.'”  So, they killed the
son.

We also are wicked stewards when we act like life is all about us,
when we refuse to serve God and neighbor.  God calls us to bear good
fruit, to do His work of carrying the message of repentance and
salvation in the name of Jesus Christ.

Jesus bore our wickedness on the cross.  When we repent, the Father
in heaven restores us to the glorious inheritance of heaven for the
sake of the blood of the Son.  Having been forgiven, bear good fruit
in His name.  Amen.
