Matthew 21:9, Luke 19:39-40 Hosanna! Save Us Now!
The good news is that Jesus came to Jerusalem to save sinners. Saint
Matthew (21:9 ESV) reports, “And the crowds that went before him and
that followed him were shouting, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David!
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the
highest!’"
“And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, ‘Teacher, rebuke
your disciples.’ [Jesus] answered, ‘I tell you, if these were silent,
the very stones would cry out.’" (Luke 19:39-40) Hosanna! Save us
now!
The Pharisees did not want to be saved. They were concerned that the
people cheering Jesus would upset the Romans – rebellion! The Romans
permitted King Herod some authority and the Pharisees and some of the
Jews pretended not to be enslaved. But, it was all a lie. The
Romans occupied Israel and Herod was a puppet. In spite of all
efforts to maintain the false peace, the walls literally came
crashing down in 70AD when the Romans killed every man, woman and
child in Jerusalem.
The people really needed to be saved. Many of them wanted a military
general to lead the Jews to victory over the Romans. Jesus came to
save them and be king (“the Son of David”), but not of Jerusalem, but
of people’s hearts and of the kingdom of heaven.
Do you want to be saved? There is a lot to be enslaved to – the
Government, credit cards, alcohol and drugs, pornography, gambling,
violent video games, unhealthy relationships. Some people want to
hedge their bets – partially free in Jesus and partially a slave to
the world and its vices. The reality is that only one person can be
king of your heart. Only one can save you. Only one can set you
free from sin, eternal death and the devil.
The whole creation awaits the revealing of the children of God. All
heaven rejoices as each sinner repents, returns to the Lord, and is
washed clean by the blood of Christ.
“Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of
the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!’" Hosanna! Save us now! Amen.
