Maundy Thursday Poured Out for You
On Maundy Thursday, Jesus took the cup after supper saying (Luke
22:20 ESV): "This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant
in my blood.”
The people did not keep the old covenant to live as God’s people.
They did not love God and neighbor. If they had, they would have
lived eternally. God is just. We deserve His wrath and punishment
because of our disobedience. If you were to stand before God on your
merit, the things that you have done both good and bad, you would be
convicted of sin and condemned to hell. Even one sin separates you
from holy God. No one has kept the law perfectly. “All have sinned
and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
Out of His love for mankind, God purposed to save us from the
consequences of our sin. This does not mean that everyone will be
saved, but that everyone has the opportunity to be saved. No human
merit, darkened by the condition of original sin, could earn
salvation. Consequently, both the covenant (the promise of
salvation) and the gift of salvation (the payment for sins and hope
of heaven) had to come from God.
God in His mercy sent Jesus Christ to be the acceptable and
sufficient payment for your sin. He lived a perfect life in
obedience to the Father. All who trust/have faith in the Messiah
receive forgiveness and salvation. Moreover, God in his divine
forbearance passed over former sins of those who lived in the time
before the cross of Jesus. God gave salvation to all who had faith
in the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. This
showed God’s righteousness that He is just and the justifier of the
one who has faith in Jesus even today. (Romans 3:25-26)
Hebrews 10:16-17 says, "’This is the covenant that I will make with
them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their
hearts, and write them on their minds,’ then he adds, ‘I will
remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.’"
The covenants of the Old Testament were make in the blood of animals.
The blood signified the serious nature and sacrifice of the covenant.
On Maundy Thursday, there was only one sacrifice that was sufficient
for the sins of the world. That sacrifice was the blood of the very
Son of God. One sacrifice for all: pure forgiveness, complete
righteousness, pure grace, not darkened by human sin, the union of
true man and true God, God’s mercy, love and eternal promise shown on
a cross.
The blood of Christ washes you clean of sins, gives you a clear
conscience, gives you His righteousness and holiness, strengthens you
in the faith, and assures you of your hope of heaven. Romans 6:23
says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is
eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Jesus said, "This cup that
is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.” Live in this
faith. Amen.
